TL;DR

An MBA is a university degree; a PGDM is a postgraduate diploma from autonomous institutes like the IIMs. The degree name matters far less than the institution — a PGDM from IIM-A outweighs an MBA from most universities. ISB’s PGP is technically a certificate, not a degree or diploma, yet remains one of India’s most sought-after management qualifications.

If you’ve been researching MBA programs in India, you’ve almost certainly hit this wall: the difference between MBA and PGDM is never explained clearly, and the more you look, the more alphabet soup appears — PGP, PGPx, EPGP, PGPEX, IPMX, GMP.

What makes it more confusing is that the top management programs in the country — IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, XLRI, ISB — don’t give you an MBA at all. And yet they’re the programs everyone aspires to. So what’s actually going on?

This article explains the history behind why India developed two parallel degree systems, breaks down the real differences, and helps you figure out which type of program to target based on your profile and goals.

01 — Why both exist

Why India Has Both MBA and PGDM

The answer is regulatory — and it starts with a rule AICTE imposed decades ago.

The MBA degree was created at Harvard in 1908. It spread through American universities, then made its way to India before it even reached Europe. India’s first MBA was awarded by the Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM) in Kolkata in 1953. INSEAD in France launched its MBA four years later, in 1957.

But then a regulatory complication entered the picture. The AICTE — the All India Council for Technical Education, which regulates all technical and management education in India — had a rule: an institution cannot award a Master’s degree unless it is affiliated to a University.

This put India’s best business schools in an odd position. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, XLRI Jamshedpur — these were autonomous institutions, not affiliated to any university. So despite being globally ranked and nationally respected, they legally couldn’t call their programs an “MBA.”

The solution? Create a new category altogether. The PostGraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) was born — a diploma rather than a degree, offered by autonomous institutes without needing university affiliation. It delivered the same education, same case-method teaching, same rigorous curriculum — just under a different name.

If you’re planning to apply to these programs, understanding this distinction early saves you from chasing the wrong target. Our MBA admissions consulting team works with applicants across both MBA and PGDM programs.

Following the IIM Act

The IIM Act was passed by Parliament in 2017 and received Presidential assent in early 2018, granting IIMs the status of Institutions of National Importance and the right to award MBA degrees. However, most IIMs continue to use PGP/PGDM branding for their flagship programs. The name stuck because the brand around it is too strong to change.

03 — The alphabet soup

The Full Alphabet Soup, Explained

Once you understand the MBA–PGDM divide, the rest of the terminology starts to make sense.

PGP — PostGraduate Program

Used by ISB Hyderabad and some IIMs for their flagship programs. ISB’s PGP is a one-year intensive program — not a degree, not a diploma, technically a certificate. It has no AICTE recognition. And it consistently places its graduates at some of the highest salaries in the country. Brand matters more than label.

PGPx / PGPEX — Executive Variants

IIM Ahmedabad’s PGPx was India’s first executive MBA equivalent — a full-time one-year program for working professionals. The “x” stands for Executive. IIM Bangalore offers the EPGP; IIM Calcutta offers the PGPEX. These are all variations on the same concept: a compressed, intensive MBA-equivalent for mid-career professionals who can take a year off from work.

Global vs India context

Outside India, an Executive MBA is almost always a part-time program designed for professionals who continue working throughout the course. In India, thanks to IIM-A’s PGPx, it became a full-time one-year program. This is why “Executive MBA” means different things depending on where you look.

IPMX — IIM Lucknow

The International Programme in Management for Executives from IIM Lucknow. One-year, full-time, executive-focused. Another executive MBA by a different name.

GMP — XLRI Jamshedpur

XLRI’s General Management Program. Same concept: an accelerated full-time management program for experienced professionals.

PGDBA — PostGraduate Diploma in Business Administration

An older term that some institutions use instead of PGDM. The distinction between PGDM and PGDBA is largely cosmetic — both are diplomas offered by autonomous institutes, and the quality depends entirely on the institution offering it.

04 — How to choose

Which Should You Choose — MBA or PGDM?

The most honest answer: the institution matters far more than the degree name.

A PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad will open more doors — in India and internationally — than an MBA from a mid-ranked university. Recruiters know the institution. Very few scrutinise whether the certificate says “MBA,” “PGDM,” or “PGP.”

The decision should never be “MBA vs PGDM” in isolation. It should be “which specific programs match my profile and goals?” The degree type is a downstream consequence of which institution you’re targeting.

How to decide based on what you’re looking for
If your goal is

Top-tier placement + brand prestige in India

Target IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, XLRI, or ISB. These offer PGP or PGDM. The degree name will never hold you back.

If your goal is

International recognition of your qualification

A PGDM from a top IIM is widely understood abroad. If maximum portability matters, also consider global MBA programs alongside domestic options.

If your goal is

Staying in your job while studying

Look at part-time MBA programs from NMIMS, Symbiosis, or MICA — or executive programs like PGPx/EPGP if you have 8+ years experience.

If your goal is

A globally recognised 1-year MBA

ISB’s PGP is the benchmark in India. Consider INSEAD, LBS, or HEC Paris if you’re open to studying abroad.

The practical takeaway

All of the institutions listed above — regardless of whether they offer an MBA, PGDM, or PGP — are credible programs. The degree name will rarely be the deciding factor when recruiters make hiring decisions. Your target should be the institution, not the label on the certificate.

Yes, for practical purposes in India, a PGDM from a top autonomous institution is treated as equivalent to — and often more prestigious than — an MBA from a university-affiliated institution. The PGDM is a diploma rather than a degree in the technical, regulatory sense. However, when it comes to corporate hiring, salary benchmarks, and career opportunities, PGDM programs from IIMs, XLRI, MDI, and SPJIMR are typically ranked above MBA programs from university-affiliated institutions.

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) formally recognises PGDMs from approved AICTE-listed institutions as equivalent to MBA degrees for the purposes of employment and higher studies.

Yes. The AIU recognition of PGDM as equivalent to an MBA means that PGDM holders are eligible to apply for PhD programs at Indian universities under the same criteria as MBA graduates. Most IIMs also offer Fellow Programmes in Management (FPM), which are doctoral-level programs open to their own PGP/PGDM graduates as well as external candidates.

A PGDM is a PostGraduate Diploma in Management — a formal diploma-level qualification. A PGP (PostGraduate Program) is technically a certificate, not a diploma or degree. ISB’s PGP is the most prominent example. Both are treated with comparable seriousness by recruiters, and the differences are regulatory, not educational.

Yes — they have the authority to since the IIM Act was passed by Parliament in 2017 and received Presidential assent in early 2018. This law gave IIMs the status of Institutions of National Importance and the right to award degrees, including MBAs. However, most IIMs have continued to use their existing program names (PGP, PGDM) because the brand equity built around those names is significant.

Institution brand matters more than degree type for international employment. A PGDM from IIM-A or IIM-B is well-understood and respected at global firms with India operations. If you’re targeting roles where specific degree recognition is required, or want maximum portability across geographies, a one-year MBA from an internationally accredited school (INSEAD, LBS, or ISB — which is AACSB accredited) may be a cleaner option.

IIM flagship two-year PGP/PGDM programs primarily accept CAT scores, not GMAT. GMAT is relevant for IIM executive programs (PGPx, EPGP, PGPEX), ISB, and ISB Mohali. For ISB’s PGP, a competitive GMAT score typically sits above 705 on the GMAT Focus scale. Work experience and profile strength are weighted heavily alongside the score.

The MBA vs PGDM debate has one right answer: target the institution that fits your profile and goals. The degree name on the certificate will take care of itself. 50,000+ students have made this decision with Crackverbal’s help since 2006.
