The unfiltered guide for fresh graduates and early-career professionals. ISB's brand is real, the placement track record is not yet established, and you deserve to know both.
The ISB Post Graduate Programme for Young Leaders (PGP YL) launched its first cohort in mid-2025. It is a 20-month full-time residential MBA-equivalent programme at ISB's Hyderabad campus, designed for fresh graduates and early-career professionals with 0–24 months of work experience.
It accepts GMAT, GRE, and CAT scores (test-centre-based only). Programme fees are ₹21,65,000 plus 18% GST, with accommodation at ₹3,95,000: approximately ₹29–30 lakh total. 40–50% of the cohort receives scholarships.
The honest framing: ISB's brand is one of the strongest in Indian management education, and PGP YL carries that brand genuinely. Same faculty, same ISB alumni network, same campus. But this is a new programme launched in 2025 with no placement track record yet. The first cohort will complete the programme in early 2027. Until then, PGP YL placement data does not exist. Make this decision with clear eyes.
No placement data exists for ISB PGP YL. The programme launched in 2025 and the first cohort will graduate in early 2027. ISB has indicated that PGP YL graduates will have access to ISB's placement infrastructure and alumni network. But the specific placement record, average CTC, company list, and sector distribution for this programme do not yet exist.
Any information comparing "ISB PGP YL placements" to IIM placements is either projection, speculation, or based on the full-time PGP's numbers. The PGP YL is not the PGP. Make this decision with your eyes open to that uncertainty.
Six questions for fresh graduates and early-career professionals evaluating India's newest top-tier management programme.
1. Is ISB's brand specifically why you want this programme — not just any top-tier management education?
2. Is your academic profile competitive — GMAT 700+, GRE 320+, or CAT 98–99%ile?
3. Are you comfortable making a ₹30L investment in a programme whose first cohort has not graduated yet?
4. Can you build a compelling case for why you want management education now, not after 2 years of work?
5. Have you seriously evaluated IIM A/B/C 2-year PGPs as alternatives, and do you have a specific reason for choosing ISB PGP YL over them?
6. What does "it worked" look like 3 years after graduating from ISB PGP YL?
No ISB PGP YL placement data exists yet. Use ISB PGP median placement (₹32 LPA) as a directional benchmark only — knowing the first YL cohort results will tell the real story in 2027.
No YL-specific placement data is available. This model uses a directional post-MBA salary assumption. The ₹30L all-in cost is based on the 2025–27 fee structure (₹21.65L + 18% GST + ₹3.95L accommodation). 40–50% of the cohort receives merit scholarships. Model with your own salary assumption. Do not rely on ISB PGP numbers for a different programme.

Get Free Profile EvaluationThe ISB PGP YL is a 20-month full-time residential programme at ISB Hyderabad. Approximately 130 seats per cohort. The programme targets fresh graduates and professionals with up to 24 months of work experience: a profile that is younger than the full-time ISB PGP (avg 4 years), making PGP YL comparable to an IIM 2-year PGP in entry profile.
The curriculum is structured as an MBA-equivalent across 20 months, allowing more time for internship exposure, project work, and career development than the ISB PGP's 12-month format can accommodate.
The 20-month format is longer than the ISB PGP (12 months) and slightly shorter than a standard IIM 2-year PGP (24 months). The extra time vs the ISB PGP is specifically intended to allow internship exposure, which matters significantly for candidates with 0–2 years of experience who are still building their career positioning.
ISB has indicated that PGP YL will have a mid-programme internship window similar to international MBA summer internships. For fresh graduates, this internship exposure before the final placement season is a meaningful structural advantage over the compressed 12-month ISB PGP format.
PGP YL graduates receive the ISB degree and access to ISB's alumni network of 67,000+ professionals. They have access to the same Hyderabad campus, the same faculty, and ISB's Career Advancement Services for placement support.
What they do not automatically inherit is the full-time ISB PGP's placement track record. The consulting firms, technology companies, and financial services institutions that have been recruiting at ISB for 20+ years have relationships with the ISB PGP programme specifically. The PGP YL employer relationship-building is new and being established by the current cohorts. The brand is genuine; the specific placement pipeline is still being built.
PGP YL requires a valid GMAT, GRE, or CAT score from a test-centre-based sitting (no online scores accepted). The process includes application submission with essays, shortlisting based on academic record and test scores, and a personal interview conducted by industry practitioners, ISB faculty, and alumni.
Competitive benchmarks are GMAT 700+, GRE 320+, or CAT 98–99 percentile. ISB does not publish a minimum score; the selection is holistic. The programme runs two rounds per admissions cycle; Round 1 gives priority access to scholarship consideration. 40–50% of the class is expected to receive merit or merit-cum-need scholarships.
For a CAT 99%ile candidate who can gain admission to IIM A, B, or C, the choice is genuinely complex. IIM A/B/C carry 50+ years of placement history with documented consulting, finance, and general management outcomes, brand recognition across all sectors, and alumni networks embedded in every major Indian employer.
ISB PGP YL carries ISB's brand and network (strong in consulting and technology specifically) but with no PGP YL-specific placement history. For candidates with a specific consulting or technology goal and a preference for ISB's environment, ISB PGP YL is a legitimate choice. For candidates for whom placement certainty is the primary criterion, IIM A/B/C has the edge until PGP YL's own placement track record is established.
ISB's Hyderabad campus is one of India's most well-designed business school campuses: residential, modern, world-class infrastructure. The 20-month residential experience provides quality peer network-building that a shorter programme cannot match.
As a founding cohort participant, you are also shaping what PGP YL becomes. That carries both opportunity and uncertainty.
| Dimension | ISB PGP YL | IIM A / B / C 2-Year PGP |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 20 months, Hyderabad residential | 24 months, campus residential |
| Total Fees | ₹~30L all-in | ₹20–30L depending on IIM |
| Placement History | No data yet. First cohort graduates 2027 | 50+ years of documented placement data |
| Consulting Pipeline | ISB brand strong; PGP YL-specific pipeline being established | Deep, documented, sector-specific for each IIM |
| Entry Score | GMAT 700+ / GRE 320+ / CAT 98–99%ile | CAT 99%ile+ for IIM A/B/C |
| Who Should Choose | Strong GMAT profiles who prefer ISB brand and Hyderabad ecosystem over IIM format | CAT 99%ile profiles who want placement certainty at the top tier |
If you have CAT 99%ile and IIM A/B/C admission, choose IIM. The placement track record is irreplaceable for a fresh graduate's first employer targeting. If your test score is GMAT-strong but CAT-moderate, ISB PGP YL is a genuinely compelling choice and ISB's institutional strength gives reasonable confidence in eventual outcomes. If you are choosing PGP YL as a consolation after IIM A/B/C rejection, think carefully before committing ₹30L.
| Dimension | ISB PGP YL (Now) | Work 2 Years + ISB PGP |
|---|---|---|
| Timeline | 20 months from now. Complete by 2027 | Work 2 years + 12 months PGP = 3 years to the same career level |
| Placement Data | No YL-specific data; programme is new | ISB PGP has ₹32 LPA median with 20+ years of documented outcomes |
| Work Experience | Enters workforce at 22–24 with MBA | Enters workforce with 2 years of experience + ISB PGP brand |
| GMAT Timing | Take GMAT now. Typically easier to score well closer to undergraduate study | Take GMAT in 18 months. Competitive prep while working is harder |
| ROI | Higher risk (new programme) but faster credential | Lower risk (proven programme) but longer timeline and opportunity cost |
Both paths lead to ISB. The trade-off is certainty vs timing. If you are confident in PGP YL's eventual outcomes and want to accelerate your career credential, PGP YL now is valid. If you are uncertain, working for 2 years first and then applying to ISB PGP gives you stronger essays, real work experience, and a programme with a documented placement track record.
| Dimension | ISB PGP YL | Direct Employment + Work 4–5 Years |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate Earnings | No income for 20 months; ₹30L expense | ₹6–10 LPA immediate income; 4–5 years of savings |
| 4-Year Career Position | MBA + 2 years work = ₹25–35 LPA target | Strong individual performer: ₹15–20 LPA with industry experience |
| MBA Later? | ISB PGP YL credential is permanent; no second MBA needed | ISB PGP at 4–5 years experience is a stronger application with clearer career goals |
| Risk | Unknown placement outcomes for the new programme | No MBA risk, but limited career pivot options without a business degree |
For engineering graduates with a strong placement offer (₹8–12 LPA), working first and applying to ISB PGP at 3–4 years of experience is often the better ROI decision: stronger application, higher salary target, and a programme with documented outcomes. For graduates without a strong placement alternative, or those with a specific consulting or product management goal that benefits from early management education, PGP YL's ISB brand is a meaningful accelerant.
PGP YL is selecting candidates based primarily on academic quality, since work experience is limited. A strong academic record + GMAT 700+ or CAT 98–99%ile is the foundation. The programme does not have a minimum cutoff, but the competitive pool is academically strong.
Essays that cannot demonstrate intellectual rigour, curiosity, and leadership potential alongside the score will be screened out.
"I want to be a business leader" is insufficient. A 20-year-old with 0 years of experience cannot have the same career clarity as a 26-year-old with 4 years of experience. But you can demonstrate research, sector knowledge, and a specific target.
Name a sector. Name a function. Explain why management education now, not after 2 years of work, serves that goal.
Without significant work experience, PGP YL applications must demonstrate leadership through academic projects, extracurriculars, sports, social impact, or entrepreneurial initiatives.
The admissions panel is looking for candidates who have already demonstrated the ability to take initiative, lead others, and create outcomes beyond individual performance. Academic achievement alone is not sufficient.
With IIM 2-year programmes as the natural comparator, PGP YL essays must address why ISB and why PGP YL over the IIM option.
Genuine answers reference ISB's alumni density in consulting and technology, the Hyderabad campus ecosystem, ISB's global faculty, or a specific aspect of the PGP YL curriculum. Generic answers about "ISB's ranking" or "global recognition" do not differentiate.
It is a significant one. The ISB PGP (1-year, for 4+ years experience) has ₹34.21 LPA average CTC from 405 companies with 20+ years of documented placement history. The ISB PGP YL is a new programme whose first cohort has not graduated.
Any "expected" or "projected" ISB PGP YL placement data is not ISB-published data. It is estimation by third parties. Make the ₹30L decision based on ISB's institutional brand and your own realistic salary modelling, not on the ISB PGP's placement numbers applied to a fundamentally different programme.
The admissions panel is looking for candidates who have chosen PGP YL positively: who can articulate why ISB, why now, and why this specific programme is the right fit for their goals. Essays that read as "I tried for IIM A but did not make it; ISB PGP YL is my next best option" do not demonstrate the programme commitment and career clarity that ISB looks for.
If PGP YL is your genuine first choice for specific reasons, make that case explicitly. If it is your backup, either wait and retake CAT for IIM or re-evaluate whether this is the right investment to make from a position of "second best."
Based on the first cohort, ISB PGP YL appears to be highly selective: estimated 5–7% acceptance rate, comparable to ISB PGP's 15–25% rate relative to the applicant pool. With 130 seats and a strong application pool of fresh graduates with GMAT 700+ and strong academics, the competition is significant.
The programme is not a "lower bar ISB." It is a different programme at similar academic selectivity, targeting a different career stage.
