IIM-B does not require any essays; however, they have one Statement of Purpose and two Recommendation letters. We will first begin with the Statement of Purpose, and then we will proceed to the two questions required for the Letter of Recommendation.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE ANALYSIS OVERVIEW

A Statement of Purpose (SOP) that enables the applicant to highlight his/her future goals and achievements.
(No word limit)

This question is both good and bad news as there is no word limit. You may now think you can write a 2000 or 3000-word essay detailing your life, but we suggest writing a 750-1000 word statement. The reason is that concise information helps retain the reader’s attention and does not allow you to deviate from the topic.
Before we attempt the Statement of Purpose, let us address two questions that form your essay’s crux.

The questions are:

1. What is your purpose in life?

2. Why have you been put on planet Earth?

To answer the first question, you need to first begin with your drive. This section will form the core of your statement. It will also help the admissions team understand who you are and how your life experiences shaped you.

For example, you may be someone who believes that technology has the answer to solve problems. Maybe you are a teacher who feels that education is a way to make the world better.

In this section, you should elaborate on your life journey and mention significant experiences of your life. Remember not to repeat your resume or give a walkthrough about what the admissions team already will know from your application. Instead, mention the essence of your growth as a person.

For the second question, you should mention what you want to do, now that you have grown up.

Here you should also answer the following questions.

– What is it that lies ahead of you?
– What is it that you think is what you should be doing with your life?

Tip:
We will simplify how to write this essay by dividing it into three sections:

1. Start with your journey
2. Mention your future
3. Explain why IIM-B

Also, remember to mention your opinion on the impact of COVID in your industry.

To conclude,

– Start with your journey and learning. Keep to about 200 to 250 words
– Talk about your future and keep it to 300 to 350 words
– Mention how IIM-B will help you and write it for 300 to 350 words.

We now move on to the Recommendation letters. Let’s discuss them in detail below.

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS

For the recommendation letters, your referee will need to answer the following questions:

QUESTION 1

What do you consider the applicant’s most outstanding talent or ability?

QUESTION 2

What do you consider the applicant’s chief liabilities and weaknesses?

These recommendation questions are classic ‘Strength and Weakness’ questions, and your recommender should be able to write these if he has worked with you for some time. However, we suggest that you explain to your referee why you are applying for the program and your post-MBA goals. This will help them formulate your recommendation answers correctly.

Tip:
If you have had multiple managers, kindly discuss your older projects with them. It is vital to assess your strength and weakness.
